Use numbers or letters for other items only when necessary. Including lower level headings is optional. The following illustrates this: Chapter Titles and Headings Chapter headings and titles appear as follows, beginning two inches from the top of the page: Quotations within these block or indented quotations may use double quotations.
After doing this, you should see a "Section Break Next Page " code inserted into your document. The following is one way in which to order headings and to type them. Click the "Delete" key on your keyboard to delete the page number from this section. If your paper includes additional sections for example, if your Approval Page was added as a separate section from your Title pageyou may have to experiment with linking and unlinking sections from each other -- unlink a section if its page numbering will be different from the one before it, but link together any sections where the page numbering will continue from the one before it.
The length of the abstract should be limited to words. If you are attributing an idea that you paraphrased to someone, use the name and date according to APA style such as Jones,or as shown in the first sentence below.
Place your cursor at the very end of the text in the first section after your Table of Contents and any Lists of Tables and Figuresbeing careful NOT to place it in the footer where the page number is if the text above becomes grayed out, you are in the footer — try clicking higher. You are required to follow that format exactly.
Format requirements differ from year to year and from school to school.
In the "Navigation" section of this tab, you will see a highlighted button labeled "Link to Previous" which tells Word to link the footer in this section to the previous section and to continue its page numbering scheme. The page numbering for the section with your Abstract and Table of Contents should change to lower-case Roman numerals.
See the sample lists in the next section. Do not allow initials to break between lines; keep them together on one line or the other. In this example, we want Section 2 which begins at Chapter I and contains the main text of our thesis or dissertation to use Arabic numerals and to start numbering this section from page 1.
Click-and-drag your cursor over the page number to select it. Please note that the copyright date is the year of your degree conferral. Next, you will need to change the page number format to lower-case Roman numerals i.
Use ten underscore characters, ending with a period if the author is exactly the same as the previous one, or with a comma if the author is the first of a series of new authors, as shown below. Again, all material in an appendix must fit within the overall page margins. Numbers beginning a sentence, as well as numbers below 10 or, if you prefer, 12 should be spelled out when they appear within the text.
Table of Contents and Lists of Tables and Figures Because a dissertation does not have an index, your Table of Contents should be as comprehensive as possible. Regardless of the style guide you use, avoid having one or two lines of an entry on one page and the rest of the citation on the next page.

APA style title pages are centered horizontally and vertically. It consists of the title of your paper, your name and institution.
For dissertations, it should also include the degree you are submitting the dissertation for, the month and the year. Page Size The whole thesis must be on an " x 11" page size, and must be in a single, page-wide column. Do not use two or more columns in your thesis.
